How to handle negative people in 5 proven steps?
It is easy to preach than to practice. Negativity is the primary source of our failure and the same comes from numerous sources. However, one of the major source of negativity are the negative people surrounding us. These are the people who are downright draining, they juice you up and only making you feel that alas if they don’t exist. It’s a futile thought as they exist everywhere.
Negative people can also cause problems for us on an individual level. Perhaps it’s that vendor who causes you to grit your teeth. Or maybe it’s a colleague whom you avoid at all costs. It’s important to recognize when these negative individuals intrude in your life in an unwelcome manner.
Sometimes, we unknowingly give toxic individuals influence over our thoughts, behaviors, and feelings. Whether you spend two hours complaining about that boss you don’t like, or you let an angry customer ruin your day, it’s important to regain your personal power.
There are people whom we can simply say good bye but there are also the people who become part of our life or work whom we cannot simple ignore. But these people have one thing in common: boundless negative energy that ends up affecting everyone around them.
So today I started thinking about how we interact with negative or difficult people. People who seem chronically critical, belligerent, indignant, angry, or just plain rude.
When someone repeatedly drains everyone around them, how do you maintain a sense of compassion without getting sucked into their doom? And how do you act in a way that doesn’t reinforce their negativity–and maybe even helps them?
The Inspiring Life team brings to you 5 proven tips through which you can handle negative people.
5 proven tips to handle negative people.
1. Never Argue with a Negative Person.
This is what I learnt from my personal experience that when we know that the person in front of us is negative, we should resist ourself to get into an argument with that person. The negative people always carry a staunch opinion about what they are speaking and just because you are arguing they are not going to change their opinion. Whatever you say, he/she can find 10 different reasons to back up his/her viewpoint. The discussion will just swirl into more negativity, and you pull yourself down in the process. You can give constructive comments, and if the person rebutts with no signs of backing down, don’t engage further.
When dealing with a negative person it’s tempting to let yourself slide into anger or frustration, but save yourself the heartache. Responding angrily only feeds their negativity. Hold your tongue and listen. Eventually, when they realize you won’t give them the reaction they seek, they will take their angry rants elsewhere.
2. Stick to light topic
There are certain people who gets into negative mode when certain topics are discussed. Say a person might get negative when topic related to his career is discussed. So, avoid discussing that topic.
Our 1st instinct with negative people should be to help bring them to a more positive place. But if it’s apparent the person is stuck in his/her negativity, the unhappiness may be too deeply rooted to address in a one-off conversation, or for you to help him/her unravel it. Bring in a new topic to lighten the mood. Simple things like new movies, daily occurrences, common friends, make for light conversation. Keep it to areas the person feels positive towards.
3. Praise the person for positive thing.
Always believe in a fact that every person had traces of positive with negativity. Always take the pain to praise the positivity of the person you know to deal and spread the venom of negativity.
Always believe in another aspect that negative people aren’t just negative to others. They’re also negative to themselves. If you already feel negative around them, imagine how they must feel all the time. What are the things the person is good at? What do you like about the person? Recognize the positive things and praise him/her for it. He/she will be surprised at first and might reject the compliment, but on the inside he/she will feel positive about it. That’s the first seed of positivity you’re planting in him/her and it’ll bloom in the long-term.
4. Ignore Negative comments.
The best way to deal with the negative people is to ignore their negative comments. Just see that whenever they rant the negativity, you should ignore the same simply by drifting yourself to something else. But whenever they are saying something positive, engage with them more enthusiastically.
Also do believe in one thing that Some people complain as a way of crying for help. They may not be conscious of it though, so their comments come across as complaints rather than requests. Take the onus to lend a helping hand. Just a simple “Are you okay?” or “Is there anything I can do to help you?” can do wonders.
5.Finally, maintain a positive boundary.
Negative people can ruin your life only if you give then power to do the same. Don’t make them power to gain over you. Don’t ignore them but build a couch of positivity around yourself. Remain in touch with positive person, read positive books and also do engage in positive discussion.
All these will create an aura of positivity around you which will not only help you not to get trap inside these traps but may also send some positive vibes to the other person.
