Rediscovering Dreams Amidst Responsibilities

✍️ Moinak’s JournalReflections, Experiences, and Lessons from My Journey

There is a question I often ask myself these days. “What would my younger self think if he met me today?” Would he be proud? Would he be disappointed? Or would he simply smile? He realized the journey took far longer than expected. Yet, I never completely lost sight of the dreams that quietly lived inside me. Like many young people, I believed dreams had deadlines. I imagined life would unfold neatly. It would progress through education, career, success, and recognition. Somewhere along the way, I’d have the opportunity to write the books that lived in my imagination.

Back then, everything seemed possible because life had not yet introduced me to its favorite teacher—responsibility. Responsibility has a way of changing our conversations with ourselves. The dreams that once occupied the center of our lives slowly move to the edges. Career comes first. Family comes first. Bills come first. Unexpected challenges come first. Without even noticing it, we become experts at postponing ourselves. That is exactly what happened to me.

I never made a conscious decision to stop dreaming. I simply became busy living. Years passed. My profession gave me opportunities to learn. It allowed me to travel and to meet remarkable people. I grew in ways I had never imagined. I am grateful for that journey. It shaped my discipline, taught me responsibility and gave me countless stories that I now cherish. Yet somewhere beneath meeting schedules, official files and daily commitments, another voice refused to disappear. It was quieter than before, but it was always there. It whispered whenever I entered a bookshop. It appeared whenever I read a beautifully written paragraph. It lingered after finishing a remarkable book. It asked only one question.

“When will you write yours?” For years, I had no answer. Instead, I offered excuses. “I’m too busy.” “After retirement.” “When life becomes less demanding.” “When I have more time.” Looking back, I realize something important. Life never becomes less demanding. It simply changes its demands.

If we wait for the perfect season to pursue what matters, we will spend our entire lives waiting. There were moments when I genuinely believed the dream had become unrealistic. The world already had countless writers. Bookshops overflowed with brilliant authors. Every meaningful idea seemed to have been expressed more beautifully than I ever could. Who was I to imagine that my words matter? Slowly, doubt disguised itself as practicality.

I told myself that writing was a pleasant hobby rather than a meaningful calling. After all, I had a respectable profession; I had responsibilities. That was enough. Yet the strange thing about genuine dreams is that they rarely disappear because we ignore them. They simply become quieter. They wait patiently. Not for better circumstances, but for greater courage. There is a difference. Better circumstances depend on the world. Greater courage depends on us.

I now realize that the greatest obstacle was never a lack of time. It was the fear of beginning imperfectly. I wanted my first article to be exceptional. I wanted my first book to matter. I wanted readers to appreciate what I wrote. Those expectations became so heavy that they prevented me from taking the very first step. Perfection often wears the disguise of preparation. In reality, it is often another form of fear.

One evening, after another ordinary day, I opened a blank page on my computer. There was no grand plan. No publishing contract. No audience waiting. No certainty that anyone would ever read what I was about to write. Only a blank page. And that was enough because every meaningful journey begins with something wonderfully ordinary. A single page, a single sentence, a single decision. Looking back now, I don’t think that evening changed my life because I wrote something extraordinary. It changed my life because I finally stopped waiting for extraordinary conditions. I simply began. Sometimes the bravest decision we make is not changing careers. It is not moving cities or taking enormous risks. Sometimes courage is much quieter. Sometimes courage is opening a blank page after years of silence and allowing yourself to write the first honest sentence. I didn’t know where that sentence would lead. I still don’t. But I know this: That evening, I stopped postponing a conversation. It was a conversation I had been avoiding for years. It was the conversation with the dream that had never truly left me.

WHEN LIFE TOOK OVER DREAM

Dreams are rarely abandoned because we stop loving them. More often, they are buried beneath the weight of ordinary life. That is what happened to me. As the years passed, life became fuller—and heavier. A career demanded responsibility. A family deserved my presence. Parents grew older. My child needed guidance. Financial security became more important than personal ambition. Every role I played mattered. Every responsibility was real, and I embraced them wholeheartedly.

Looking back, I do not regret choosing responsibility. In many ways, those years shaped the person I have become. They taught me discipline, patience, commitment and humility. But they also taught me something I recognised only much later: that sometimes, while taking care of everyone else’s future, we quietly stop taking care of our own dreams. No one notices it, not even we do, because life rewards responsibility. People appreciate reliability. They admire consistency. Very few people ask, “What dream did you have to postpone in order to become this dependable person?” Perhaps that question is too personal, or perhaps most of us already know the answer.

There were days when I would return home after work physically tired but mentally restless. The day’s work was complete. Meetings had ended, emails had been answered and files had moved from one table to another. The world would have called it a productive day. Yet somewhere inside me, there remained a quiet dissatisfaction that I struggled to explain. It wasn’t because I disliked my profession. Far from it, working in the railways and later with IRCTC introduced me to remarkable people, unforgettable journeys and experiences that no classroom could have offered. It taught me leadership, service and resilience. Many of the stories I write today were born during those years. The profession gave me material, but writing gave that material meaning. I simply hadn’t realised it yet.

dreams

Every now and then, I would buy another notebook. Its pages would remain blank. I would bookmark articles about writing. I would save ideas for books. I would tell myself, “One day, I’ll have enough time.” It became a comforting sentence. Almost like a lullaby. “One day…” But dreams do not grow because we promise them tomorrow. They grow because we give them today.

I remember walking through bookshops and running my fingers across the spines of books. Sometimes I wondered what it must feel like to see your own name on one of those covers. Then another voice would interrupt. “Be practical.” “Thousands of people write books.” “Very few succeed.” “Who are you to think yours will matter?” Self-doubt is clever. It rarely speaks loudly. It speaks reasonably. That is why it becomes so convincing. It doesn’t tell us to stop dreaming. It merely asks us to postpone the dream until conditions are perfect. The problem is that perfection never arrives.

There were moments when I almost convinced myself that perhaps writing simply wasn’t meant for me. Maybe I had started too late. Maybe life had already chosen my path. Maybe dreams belonged to another version of myself—the younger one with fewer responsibilities and more confidence. I almost believed that story. Almost. Because every time I stopped thinking about writing, something happened that drew me back. Sometimes it was a paragraph in a book that lingered in my mind for days. Sometimes it was an inspiring speech. Sometimes it was an ordinary conversation that deserved to be remembered. Sometimes it was a quiet sunrise that seemed to whisper, “Write this down before you forget how it made you feel.” The desire to write refused to leave. Not because I was trying to become an author. But because writing had quietly become the way I understood life.

Then came another realisation. The stories I wanted to tell were not extraordinary. They were ordinary. A railway platform. A delayed train. A conversation with a stranger. The Bhagavad Gita read through the eyes of modern life. Lessons from my parents. Moments with my son. Mistakes I had made. Dreams I had postponed. The more I reflected, the more I realised that life had already given me everything I needed to write. I had spent years believing I needed extraordinary experiences. In truth, I needed ordinary experiences viewed with extraordinary attention. That changed everything.

Around that time, another thought began to take shape. What if success wasn’t about becoming a famous writer? What if it was simply about becoming an honest one? That question stayed with me. It unsettled me. Because it forced me to examine my motives. Why did I want to write? Was it for recognition? For admiration? For validation? Or because something inside me genuinely wanted to contribute? The answer did not arrive overnight. It emerged slowly, article by article, reflection by reflection, and when it finally became clear, it changed not only the way I wrote but also the way I lived. I realised that the dream I had almost given up on had never been asking me to become famous. It had only been asking me to become faithful. Faithful to the stories life had entrusted to me. Faithful to the lessons I had learned. Faithful to the quiet voice that had refused to disappear all those years. Perhaps dreams are like that. They are patient. They do not demand immediate success. They ask only that we stop pretending not to hear them.

SUCCESS LOOKS DIFFERENT TO ME NOW, IT’s MORE THAN DREAMS.

There is something I have wanted to say for a long time. Perhaps this is the right moment. Perhaps every writer has one article that strips away the comfort of polished words and simply tells the truth. This is mine. If you ask me today whether I am a successful writer, my answer may surprise you. Not in the way the world usually measures success.

My books are not displayed in airport bookshops. I do not have millions of followers waiting for my next article. Most people have never heard my name. Many of the articles I spend hours writing are read by only a handful of people. Sometimes I check the statistics after publishing a piece that I have poured my heart into. The numbers are modest, very modest. There are days when I wonder whether anyone will ever discover these words. Whether the books I dream of writing will ever find their readers. Whether all this effort will ever amount to anything more than a quiet corner of the internet. There was a time when those thoughts hurt. I compared myself with writers who had thousands of readers. I admired authors whose books reached bestseller lists. I watched people build audiences that seemed impossible to imagine, and if I am completely honest, I sometimes questioned myself. “Am I good enough?” “Am I writing about the right subjects?” “Should I simply stop?”

Comparison is a dangerous companion. It never allows us to enjoy where we are because it constantly reminds us of where someone else has reached. For a while, I allowed those thoughts to occupy far too much space in my mind. Then, something unexpected happened. Nothing changed outside. No publisher suddenly appeared. No article went viral. No flood of recognition arrived. The change happened quietly. Inside me. One morning, while sitting in front of a blank page, I realised something that completely altered my relationship with writing. I was happy. Not because thousands of people were waiting to read what I wrote. Not because success had finally arrived. I was happy because I had the privilege of writing. The blank page no longer frightened me. It welcomed me.

Writing had stopped feeling like an examination. It had become a conversation. Sometimes with my readers. Often with myself. I realised that for years I had been chasing two completely different things without knowing it. One was recognition. The other was fulfilment. Recognition depends on the world. Fulfilment depends on us. Recognition can be delayed. Fulfilment can begin today. That single realisation gave me a freedom I had never experienced before. Today, when I sit down to write, I am no longer asking, “Will this become popular?” Instead, I ask, “Is this honest?” “Will this help someone think differently?” “Does this reflect what I truly believe?”

Those questions have become far more important than statistics. I still hope that one day more people will read my work. Of course I do. Every writer hopes to be read. Every author dreams that their words will travel farther than they can. I am no different. I hope my books reach readers I will never meet. I hope my articles inspire conversations in homes, classrooms and workplaces. I hope that one day someone will pick up one of my books on a difficult afternoon and find exactly the sentence they need. Those dreams are still alive. But they no longer determine whether I feel successful today. That is the difference. My happiness is no longer postponed until recognition arrives. It exists here, now.

In the simple act of writing. There is a beautiful line from the Bhagavad Gita that has stayed with me throughout this journey. We have a right to our actions. Not to the fruits of those actions. For years, I admired that teaching. Now, I am slowly trying to live it. Writing has become my Karma Yoga. Every article is my effort. Whether it reaches ten people or ten thousand is no longer entirely within my control. My responsibility is to write with sincerity. To learn continuously. To improve patiently. To remain faithful to the values I want my words to carry. The rest, I leave to time. Ironically, the less I have chased recognition, the more I have enjoyed the process of writing. I notice things I once hurried past. A conversation with a colleague. A lesson from my parents. A smile from my son. A quiet evening after a long day. A verse from the Gita that suddenly feels relevant to modern life.

Everything becomes material for reflection. Life itself has become my classroom. Perhaps that is why I no longer fear whether success will come. Because writing has already given me something success never could. It has taught me to pay attention. It has made me a better listener. A better observer. A more patient human being. It has encouraged me to ask better questions instead of pretending to have all the answers. And for that gift alone, I remain deeply grateful. Will I be recognised someday? I honestly don’t know. Perhaps yes. Perhaps no. The future has never promised certainty to anyone, but I know this much. Tomorrow morning, I will probably wake up before the world becomes too noisy. I will make myself a cup of tea. I will sit in front of another blank page, and once again, I will begin writing. Not because the world expects me to. Not because success demands it but because somewhere along this journey, writing stopped being something I wanted to achieve.

It became part of who I am. Perhaps one day my books will find thousands of readers. Perhaps they will quietly reach only a few. Either way, I will keep writing. Because I have discovered something far more valuable than recognition. I have discovered joy, and I have discovered that the truest measure of success is not whether the world knows your name. It is whether, at the end of each day, you know you remained faithful to the work your heart asked you to do. That is the kind of success I had been searching for all along. I simply didn’t recognise it when it first arrived.

WHY WILL I KEEP WRITING FOR DREAMS?

People often ask me, “What is your goal as a writer?” Years ago, I would probably have answered differently. I might have spoken about publishing books about becoming a bestselling author, about reaching thousands, perhaps even millions, of readers. There is nothing wrong with those dreams. Every writer hopes to be read. Every creator hopes that their work will travel beyond them. I still hope for that. If one day my books find a place on the shelves of homes across the country, I will consider it a privilege.

If my articles reach readers across the world, I will be deeply grateful. Recognition is a beautiful gift, but it is no longer the reason I write. Somewhere along this journey, I realised something that quietly changed my life. There are two kinds of success. The first is the success the world can see. Awards, recognition, sales, followers, reviews, applause. The second is invisible. It is the quiet satisfaction of knowing you are becoming the person you were meant to become. The first depends upon circumstances; the second depends upon character; the first can disappear overnight. The second stays with you for life. For many years, I unknowingly chased the first.Today, I consciously choose the second.

Every article I write teaches me something before it teaches anyone else. When I write about patience, I become more patient. When I write about forgiveness, I discover people I still need to forgive. When I write about purpose, I find myself questioning whether I am truly living mine. Writing has become my mirror. It refuses to let me hide behind beautiful words. It demands honesty. Sometimes it is uncomfortable. Often it is humbling. But it is always worthwhile. I have realised that I am not simply writing articles. I am documenting my own journey of becoming. Every reflection is a conversation with the person I was yesterday. Every story is an attempt to become a better version of myself tomorrow. Perhaps that is why I enjoy writing so much now. It no longer feels like performance. It feels like growth.

There is another reason I will continue writing. Years from now, long after meetings have ended and official files have been forgotten, I hope my son will know me not only through photographs but also through my thoughts. I hope he will understand what his father believed. What did he struggle with? What did he learn? What mistakes did he make? What dreams did he refuse to abandon? Perhaps one day he will read these articles and discover conversations we never had the opportunity to complete. Perhaps someone else, somewhere, will do the same. That possibility alone makes every hour spent writing worthwhile. Words have a remarkable way of outliving the people who write them. That thought fills me with both humility and responsibility.

If there is one lesson life has taught me, it is this – Dreams do not have an expiry date. They do not disappear because birthdays accumulate. They do not vanish because careers become demanding. They do not become impossible simply because we begin later than others. Dreams remain patient. Sometimes they wait quietly for decades. Not because they are weak but because they believe we will eventually find our way back. I almost didn’t and that thought still unsettles me. Had I continued postponing writing, I might have spent the rest of my life wondering, “What if I had begun?” I no longer want to live with that question.

So if you are reading this today while carrying a dream you have quietly hidden away, may I say something—not as a writer, but as a fellow traveller? Please don’t wait for certainty. Don’t wait until you feel completely ready. Don’t wait until everyone believes in you. Most meaningful journeys begin before confidence arrives. Begin while you are uncertain. Begin while your hands still tremble. Begin while your audience is small. Begin even if nobody is watching because there is something worse than failing. It is never discovering what might have happened had you tried.

People sometimes ask me where I find ideas. The truth is, I don’t think ideas are difficult to find. Life gives us more than enough. A conversation with a stranger. A verse from the Bhagavad Gita. A delayed train. A child’s innocent question. An old photograph. A rainy afternoon. A goodbye. A beginning. The real challenge is not finding ideas. It is slowing down enough to notice them. Writing has taught me to notice. For that gift alone, I shall always remain grateful.

Sunday Reflection

As I finish writing this article, I realise something unexpected. Perhaps this essay is not really about writing. It is about becoming. Writing simply happens to be the path through which I am learning who I am. Your path may be different. It may be music. Teaching. Photography. Gardening. Entrepreneurship. Helping people. Whatever it is, don’t abandon it simply because recognition has been slow to arrive. The world may never fully understand why your dream matters. It doesn’t have to. You do, and sometimes that is enough.

Whatever it is, don't abandon it simply because recognition has been slow to arrive.

The world may never fully understand why your dream matters.

It doesn't have to.

You do.

And sometimes that is enough.

Success is not the day the world recognises your work. Success is the day you fall in love with doing it, even when nobody is watching.

If this reflection reminded you of dreams you’ve quietly carried for years, don’t let it end here. Take one small step today. Write the first page. Learn the first lesson. Make the first phone call. Begin.

If this essay resonated with you, I’d love to hear about the dream you’ve refused to let go of. Share it in the comments—not because dreams need an audience, but because someone else might find the courage to begin after reading your story.

Grateful for posts like this one, they remind me there are still places online run by people who care about quality, and a look at yaveroshop reflected the same standards, you can tell the difference between content made for readers and content made just for search engines today and this is the former.
